Shapes and Colours of North Yorkshire
In the summer of 2018, I travelled to North Yorkshire to spend time with my father’s relatives. I was going through a strange and tumultuous period in my life and found myself living in a stagnant and uninspiring situation. On this trip, I explored the areas’ nature and towns and found myself inspecting small details more closely.
I began to ponder: Why do we perceive objects based on our existing knowledge rather than their true nature? We know that a rock is a rock, a roof is a roof, or a river is a river, but do we ever stop to truly look at them without any biases?
Everything contains a whole world within it, a myriad of shapes and colours lying on top of or next to each other. All of these elements together create what we perceive as a rock, a roof, or a river.
I started my project by making small watercolour sketches of the shapes and colours which I saw.
When I was back in Berlin, I turned these sketches into a fully formed project.
I worked with Lithography producing a total of 36 stones. Translating my sketches into print took much experimentation and trial and error.
I printed multiple layers on top of each other, in various degrees of transparency, trying to create a delicate illustration resonating the feeling and lightness of the original watercolour sketches.
Each print has multiple layers (from 2 to 5) printed one on top of the other. In addition to creating these prints, I also kept a small diary with sketches and text which was printed on silk paper and placed on top of each illustration in the book.
The book was then bound in a traditional Japanese bookbinding technique with a hardcover.
